7 Deadly Sins - Pride by elestrial 7 Deadly Sins - Pride by elestrial
Flawed is she who is infaturated with the image of herself

Made for a project at school on the 7 Deadly Sins. This is the first of the 7-part series. All of these were printed out on a 42" sheet of paper, they all go together as one art piece, but for submitting purposes I've split them up into pieces.

Symbolism
The color purple was chosen because it typically is associated with royalty and upper class, and pride is often thought to be a flaw shared by them.
The mirror symbolises the love she has for herself. She has sat herself on a pedestal. It's cracked because it will crumble and ultimately be her greatest downfall, (I would have preferred to make it bigger but I was restricted to a 6 x 6 canvas size).

The setting is based on the book Dante's Inferno: a dead, desolate place.

All of the seven deadly sins in my series are women because:
A) Women are thought to be more "sinful" for over hundreds of years now. Don't get all woman-activist on me for saying that, I'm a woman myself - and no, I don't believe that "women are more sinful." I think people are people; neither sex is more sinful than the other.
B) There are more women stock providers then men on deviantart. Sorry guys, but there's just not enough of you for me to use!

Same origin but branches out I think.
Vanity is mostly associated to physical looks, beauty, musicals.
Pride is works. Of cause you can be prideful about your looks.
At least that is what I always thought and heard.

How is it that I decided on a cracked pedestal for my version of pride? (It's not done yet, but I've finally got the pencil work done).
Great minds think alike, I guess...:D

Lucifer's sin was treason. He once was an angel but betraded God. He is in the deepest part of hell in a prison of ice.

No, his sin was pride. He held himself over everything, including God and demanded he'd be worshiped like God

His sin was both, really. He betrayed God, but he also did it out of pride, so yeah...

I'm sure Lucifer did his fair share of all of the 7 deadly sins - the 7 Deadly Sins aren't actually from the Bible though

Pride/vanity is definitely my fave sin out of the 7, with Wrath coming in second place. I always felt like I could relate to both of them :'P

Well, you know, I have a feeling 'Wrath' happens when someone let's all their anger out after years of either being harassed, or bullied, or whatever. Which is why I can relate ^^"

I never like to see pride shown like this. It's different than being narcissistic. Also, I've seen people use the mirror idea a million times.

But I do think it's a beautiful picture. Really.

Well actually, I didn't mean it to show her as being narcissistic - the mirror is more of a symbol. All of her attention and focus is on herself and her own accomplishments - she doesn't see (or want to see) anyone else or even the flaws that she has. She is purely focused on herself and what she wants to see. For example, she is sitting on a pedestal that is cracked but she doesn't seem to notice the cracks and is instead focusing on what she wants to see. The cracked pedestal symbolizes how she ignores the reality of things and her own flaws and places herself above everyone else. Even though the ground she stands on is not strong she places herself there anyway because she ignores her weaknesses and flaws...eventually reality will catch up to her and that pedestal will crumble and she will be forced to look away from that mirror :P I agree the mirror is a tired and overused symbol for this sin but I couldn't think of any other way to symbolize it :(

Isn't that being narcissistic? I'm not saying that the picture isn't representing pride, it's just in a way that I personally don't like.

And I love all the symbolism, it's great. Yes the mirror is overused but I think you did a great job with it anyway. (Should have said that in previous comment. :( Sorry!)

EXCEPT that narcissists don't like themselves and try to be someone they are not and are completely in love with that fake image they strive so hard to be :P
